Clean Eating: Weekly Menu {1/22/2015}

It's weekly menu time! Time to write down that plan and get to the grocery store. Not only does menu planning help me stay on track, it also saves money. I make a list of our meals for the week and then also write down all the ingredients I will need to buy. Then, when I am at the grocery store - I know exactly what I need to buy and don't end up just wandering and dumping things I don't need in my cart!

I also have learned to build leftovers into my menu. Who wants to cook every night? If I don't have enough for leftovers - I'll send them with my husband for lunch and have a quick dinner back up for the next night (eggs, rice & beans, etc).

So what's on the menu this week?

Clean Eating: Weekly Menu {1/16/2015}

The biggest key to me and staying on track is menu planning!
I truly believe that your weight loss is about 80% what goes in your mouth and 20% exercise! Yes, exercise is SO important - but what you eat is even more important. Also, why put in all that work at the gym just to ruin it?

What's on the menu this week?

Campfire Dinners

Dinner is always a struggle for me! At the end of the day, the last thing I feel like doing is cooking. I need something quick, easy, and healthy.

A friend of mine recently told me about Campfire Dinners! I love them - they are like mini, individualized pot roasts. I made these for our small group and they were a crowd pleaser.

Did I hear the lunch bell?

Lunch seems like the trickiest meal of the day for me.
My breakfast stays pretty much the same and I plan out dinner, but what about that other meal? Lunch!

I decided to document some of the clean lunches I have recently packed for my husband. These would be great for anyone! After all, aren't husbands just big kids?

1. Leftover whole wheat pizza, organic cheese stick, fruit salad (grapes & apple bits), and a handful of peanuts.

2. Ham and cheddar on mini pita pocket with spinach, air popped popcorn, 2 mandarin oranges.

3. Turkey and cheese on whole wheat bread, Babybel cheese, fruit salad (grapes & sliced mango), and some almonds.

Here's what I have planned for the week! (Sorry - I have not been very good about posting my menus.)

I am trying some new things this week!

Foodie Friday

Breakfast - 3 scrambled eggs, 1 cup of strawberries, 2 kiwi, and a few macadamia nuts. My breakfast is pretty much the same every day. I also have coffee with a little Natural Bliss coffee creamer.

Lunch - I enjoyed a turkey pita! I put some Applegate Naturals turkey and cheddar cheese in a mini whole-wheat pita pocket and heated it a little in the microwave until the cheese melted. YUM!

Snack - I made my Peanut Butter Apple Dip. 1 tbsp natural peanut butter, 1 tsp honey, cinnamon, and a few dark chocolate chunks. I ate it with a Gala apple.

Dinner - Grilled chicken breast, broccoli mountain, and Great Northern White beans.

Foodie Friday

I love seeing what others eat! It gives me new ideas on what I could make.

Breakfast - 3 scrambled eggs, 1 cup of strawberries, 1/2 cup grapes, and a few macadamia nuts. I also had a cup of coffee with a little Natural Bliss creamer.

Lunch - Whole wheat pita pocket (mini ones from Trader Joe's) with ham, cheddar cheese, tomato, spinach, and hummus! I also had a handful of almonds.
AppleGate is the cleanest deli meat I have found!

Dinner - Crockpot Chicken (recipe to come...), 1/2 sweet potato, and some spring mix with some White Balsamic and Honey dressing. I scavenged the dressing aisle for a long time and this was the best dressing I could find that I actually like!

Snack - Dark chocolate square and some pecan halves.

30 Days of Clean Eating

So I've been doing pretty well with my eating and lost 15 pounds! Woo hoo! I got off track a little - it is so easy to forget how good you feel when you eat good. My husband and I went a whole month without eating out (to be healthy and save money) and when we went out for a friend's birthday, we got so sick!

I am taking a 30 day challenge to clean up ourmy diet - which means my husband is along for the ride. We are eliminating as many processed foods as possible. There are so many awesome resources out there on clean eating - some of my favorite clean eating blogs are 1oo Days of Real Food and Whole Foods New Body. I will admit - we probably won't be perfect, but who is? I say if we have eaten 85% clean, we have succeeded!

Eat:
Whole foods
Whole Wheat / Whole Grain
Lean protein
Locally raised meat - when possible
Fruits and Vegetables
Organic - when possible (though I think it is better to eat a non-organic strawberry than a candy bar)

Do NOT Eat:
If it comes out of a box and has ingredients I cannot pronounce
Foods that say 'Fat Free, Low Fat, Light'
Fast Food
JUNK
Sodas
Refined or Artificial Sweeteners

There will be some obstacles - that's life, though, right?
Our anniversary is this month - so we will be enjoying the Melting Pot. (I am not sorry!) There's also a day or two that we will be traveling and we'll do the best we can. Other than that, I hope to 'clean up' my diet as much as possible! I know at the end of our 30 days, we'll feel so much better.

Today was actually day 2 - I'm a little behind! I went grocery shopping at Trader Joe's and was ready for the week.
